International Affairs

  • Severe Floods in Nigeria

Severe floods in Nigeria happen every year, especially during the rainy season from June to October. These floods are caused by heavy rainfall, poor drainage systems, blocked waterways, and climate change. Rivers like the Niger and Benue often overflow, flooding homes, farmlands, and roads. In many situations, people lose their homes, belongings, and even their lives.

In 2022, Nigeria faced one of its worst floods in a decade, affecting over 30 states and displacing more than 1.5 million people. The floods damaged crops and led to food shortages. Many schools and hospitals are also destroyed. The government and aid agencies try to help, but poor planning and lack of emergency systems make things worse. To reduce future damage, Nigeria requires better infrastructure, early warning systems, and public awareness programs.
